this is what monarch butterflies do over the winter...
they cluster together at over-wintering sites like this one, on the coast of goleta, california, at the ellwood beach preserve. those shadowy patches in the eucalyptus trees are monarch butterflies huddling together against the cold of the winter -- not thick bunches of eucalyptus leaves.
i took this way back in december, but am just now finally getting around to posting the picature.
during the winter months, this grove is truly a magical place -- like faerie land or something! the only site in these parts where i've heard of monarch overwintering. and it's a really small amount of land, with the sort of microclimate perfect for these creatures. i guess the flutterbys' other local habitats were all eaten up by suburban housing developments and the like...
happy spring, y'all!

Sort of ;)
but i think after they are done
cuddling for the winter they head
over to Mexico for the summer,
to my beautiful state Michoacan
...not to be confused with the Mexican Soccer League
.

Awww, the Monarchs!!!
We do have them here as our Natural bridges state park is one of their migration destination, I'd say around Halloween, it's so special!
